Think about a relay race. 

Two runners, the first one at full speed, reaching forward to pass the baton. The second reaching back to receive it. Both care about one thing: getting the baton safely to their teammate. They've practiced this handoff and don't stop until they know it worked.

Now imagine if relay teams ran races the way many patient handoffs are conducted.

Two different teams in separate stadiums, miles apart, trained with completely different handoff techniques. Since coordinating directly is complex, both teams use the same solution: they grab someone who's never run track before, put them in the middle of the relay, and ask them to somehow connect the handoff between the two experienced runners.

That untrained middle runner is the patient.

This is what led us to develop the Relay Race Methodology™. Through analyzing dozens of documented handoff failures alongside the leading research and most widely used handoff approaches, we identified five elements that define a complete handoff: Identity, Status, Context, Requirements, and Verification.
